APPLECROSS VIA SHIELDAIG – BEALACH NA BA PASS AND RETURN NORTH AROUND THE PENINSULA
Total distance: 55 miles/ 88km Driving time: 2.5 hours

Leaving the hotel turn right on to the main road which will take you up the hill and out of the woodland to give spectacular views of the north Torridon hills of Beinn Alligin (Jewel mountain) Liathach and Beinn Dearg

The road drops down again the River Balgy ( Bubbly stream; Gaelic) This short stretch of water is a conduit for spawning salmon and sea trout to the fresh water of Loch Damph hidden from view to the motorist on the road to Shieldaig ( Herring bay). This pretty coastal village, with an Inn and village shops is overlooked by a wooded Island, which is home to a seal colony and paradise for sea birds. The National Trust for Scotland manages this wildlife sanctuary.

We recommend driving over the pass to Applecross returning around the coast although the route is debatably as impressive visa versa and has the advantage of inquiring at the Applecross Inn regarding weather conditions before attempting the pass.
To ascend the pass – The Bealach na Ba (Pass of the Cattle) take the road south passing the Rassal Ash Wood Nature Reserve and leave the main road by turning right at Tornapress at the head of Loch Kishorn. The route is generally impassable in winter conditions. If in doubt, seek advice.Though narrow the road is well surfaced, with passing places, and rises through increasingly steep ground with a couple of tight hairpin bends near the top before the summit is reached after some 5 miles. At a little over 2000ft. and given good weather, there are spectacular views over the Inner Sound with islands and distant hills of the Cuillin Mountains on the Isle of Skye( The misty isle)

After drinking the panoramas the descent into the peaceful sanctuary of Applecross (A’ Chromraich) is something of a contrast as the village nestles calmly on the shores of the bay with its popular Inn and good seafood always available. There is also a village shop /post office and filling station. On the hill overlooking the village is a bakery and the Flower Tunnel café/restaurant. Steeped in history, as an ecclesiastical site it is second only to Iona and there is a historical society centre near the church where you will find further information. There choice of attractions to enjoy locally and taking the road to the south towards Toscaig are some delightfully remote and secluded bays and inlets to discover and a variety of pleasant and easy walks will find them. The drive back to Torridon follows the coast northward with the sea to the left. (west)

Some 4 miles after leaving Applecross there is a strange beach appropriately called Sand, washed high into the hill-side- a good place for the children to enjoy and a short walk to the bay. Thereafter are examples of abandoned crofts and smallholdings that were once vibrant communities, small hamlets that cling to the coast still depend largely on the sea for their lively -hood. After some 24 miles the main road is joined once again. Turn left towards Shieldaig and some 7miles of undulating and two- lane road bring you back to the Hotel.
